DO I PURSUE GOD?
To have found God and
still pursue Him is indeed a paradox of love, the lack of this is the reason we
are in this low estate as believers. We have reached a place where we no longer
have the desire for God but a state of complacency has set in. this is a deadly
foe of all spiritual growth as he reminds us in revelation 3:20 that "He stands
at the door and knocks, if we hear his voice and open the door, I will come in
and eat with that person and they with me." This is a continuous process meaning
the desire never ends but the sad news is that for many of us he really waits
for too long, so long in vain.
This generation is
complex with simple things, and in the process we end up having more of
programs, methods, organizations and a world of nervous activities which occupy
time and attention but can never satisfy the longing of the heart. The shallow
of our inner experience, the hollow of our worship, which has pushed us to imitate
the world is the evidence of our methodology which denies us from knowing
God but have only an imperfect view of Him. It takes me back to the aspect of
simplicity if we really want to know and desire God.
Matthew 5:3 is my bases
when he tells us that “blessed are the poor”, something most of us struggle
with because the material gains and selfish desires have taken the place of Gods
desire in us. making us rich in things but also very rich in worldly desires
forcing God out of our lives. This is why today a good number of us have this possessive
and covetous nature. It’s so rooted and deep that is why the language of “mine”
and “my” are innocent enough in print. But the way to deeper knowledge of God
is through the lonely valley of soul poverty and giving up of all things.
These blessed poor are
no longer slaves to the tyranny of things but have broken the York of the oppressor.
This they have done by surrendering, making them free from all sense of possession
yet possess all things. Theirs is the kingdom of heaven. The reason many will
not give up their treasures to the lord is fear of for their safety. The whole
work of redemption is to undo the tragic effect of that foul revolt, and to
bring us back to the right and eternal relationship with Him. This urge of God
within us ensures that there is a continuous pursuit of God in us.
This means that he has
to address the big problem that is self, this is not something that we do but
rather something that we are; Self righteous, self pity, Self confidence, Self admiration
and a whole lot more which are rooted deeply in us, and this things end up
manifesting as egotism, exhibitionism, self promotion- something we see with a
lot of Christian leaders. Simpler I will say it’s the fallen nature of man, and it’s
only by justification through the righteousness of Christy alone can we be
delivered from the self sin.
This has caused us to
become like what Canon Holmes of India stated that “To most people God is an inference,
not a reality. He is deducted from evidence which they consider adequate; but
he remains personally unknown to the individual.” We have never really taken
time to think of God for ourselves but leave it for the pastors and preachers
to tell us who he is. Christians it’s of great importance to go further than
theory and indeed have that personal relationship which is being built from
having a desire for God causing us to pursue him as a man does a woman.
God isn’t an idea or us
following a mere principle of life, but He is one who desire us to know him and
pursue him as he states in Hebrews 11:6 “without
faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must
believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Pursuing
God comes with a reward and it’s for those who are poor because they indeed
will see God.
I will share the story behind this reflection in following blog
